Vehicle Description 1951 Custom Mercury. This is one of the most impressive customs ever built. This was a 10 year project built by the great Joe "Candy Apple" Bailon. The 1951 Merc was started in 1987 and was finished in 1997 just in time to win the Sacramento Autorama. In 1998 and 1999 it was picked Mr Mercury and in 2000 it was inducted into the Daryll Starbird Hall of Fame in Afton, Oklahoma. This was the last car that Joe Bailon built from the ground up and has since enjoyed retirement with his wife, Marie, only to do personal projects from time to time. Joe invented "Candy Apple" paint in 1956. And has been involved with building custom cars for movie stars such as Dean Martin, Sammy Davis and more. This car has impressed the public across the United States winning Best of Show too many times to count. It has been complimented by such great builders as Frank DeRosa, Dick Dean, Bill Hines, and Daryll Starbird to name some of the great builders from the 60's thru 90's. This car is a true "one of a kind" collectible. It is currently appraised at $200,000.00 and will only be worth more as time goes by. If you are interested in a true investment for a collectible or a retirement investment, this maybe you’re calling. I have put this car at Joe Bailon's booth when he is an invited guest at the custom shows on the East Coast. Custom car owners never cease to admire his work and to talk to him about the car and how he came up with such a unique design on the "Candy Prowler".
FEATURES: 1951 Mercury, two door chopped, shaved, rounded corners. House of Color-CANDY BRANDY WINE. The car has been chopped and the roof has been reshaped to duplicate the famous "Miss Elegance" 1942 Chevy Coupe. The front of the Mercury from the side mirrors forward is completely restyled. The lights are deep frenched, fenders are peaked and the nose is reshaped with hidden directional lights with a typical Joe Bailon custom formed grille and bumper section. He is noted for his custom bumpers and grilles and his ability to design and incorporate a one of a kind smooth look. The fenders are reshaped and rolled to give a lower look to the wheel wells. The rear of the Mercury is extended 9 inches past the standard 51 Mercury and incorporates 2 pairs of El Dorado tail lights. The trunk was reformed and incorporates 3 (three) 1951 Mercury trunks to wrap under the car. The rear fenders are repeaked to give that radical low down look. The interior incorporates a Ford Galaxy rear seat and center console. Front bucket seats and a 1959 Chevrolet Impala dash enhance the front. Vintage air and heat, TV and DVD player add to the one of a kind interior along with white ultra roll and pleats with an accented maroon piping and maroon rugs add to the pristine look. The interior upholstery and rugs are brand new and only replaced the white and maroon naughahyde which was used in the original interior.
Under the hood is a mural of James Dean, Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe. The "Candy Prowler" is leaving the scene.
Notice the "Candy Apple Emblem" and is only put on a car that Joe Bailon built himself. The engine is a supercharged 351 Windsor with the blades removed to give a supercharged sound but a Carter 4 barrel efficiency. The Galaxy automatic transmission drives a Ford rear end. The wheels are spoked with wide wall tires. The chassis is a 1951 Mercury with Wilwood manual brakes. The steering has a tilt column with power steering. The Kenwood 1000 watt stereo system with AM/FM/FM Stereo/CD player blasts sounds of the 50's era with impeccable clarity. The quality, integrity, imagination of these craftsmen comes but once in a lifetime and when they are gone the masterpieces they have left behind are all that remain. There is so much more to list.
