Vehicle Description Beautifully restored 1968 AMX with factory original 390 4 spd and 3.54 factory "traction lock" rear end. This car is a true barn find that was discovered by a roofer redoing a barn roof in Kansas in the early 90's when upon looking inside the hole in the roof saw what appeared to be a car under canvas. Upon inquiring with the barn's owner, he was told the owner's son had parked it there 20 years prior when he went off to Vietnam and never returned to get the car after getting out of the military years later. A deal was made between the barn owner and the roofer for partial payment on the roofing job for what was then a 28K mile AMX in need of total restoration due to having been in the leaky barn but under canvas. The original engine was seized and a later model 360 was put in the car during the car's first cosmetic refinish. The current owner bought the car plus its original seized 390 engine with only 49500 miles on the clock in 2004 and drove it straight from Denver to Phoenix on the day he bought it. He enjoyed driving it as a very nice driver for about 18 months before starting a top to bottom restoration that was completed over the past 5 years. The 390 engine was bored .030 over and new factory replacement pistons, bearings, rings, freeze plugs and seals were installed plus a fresh valve job, new performance cam, lifters, timing set and springs were installed in addition to later model gas friendly fuel pump. AMC V-8 big valve (1.68 exhaust and 2.025 intake) cylinder heads were sourced, which flow much better than the original 68 390 rectangle port heads. Additionally an AirGap intake, Holley 650 DP carb, Mallory electronic distributor and roller tip rockers were added to the complete the engine's performance rebuild along with a custom low restriction performance exhaust. For the interior, a factory original and highly desirable RalleyPac center gauge set was added, new Legendary seat covers and foam were used to rebuild the seats, new custom carpet was installed along with custom AMX logo carpet mats, and a hooded gauge cluster cover was added to the dash. The car's body received new lower rear panels in the rear quarters (this is very common and affects nearly all 68-74 AMXs and Javelins) and the rest of the car's body was stripped and refinished in a beautiful deep luster base/clearcoat factory correct Ralley Green Metallic AMC color including engine bay and trunk (both done in single stage enamel for durability). All brake lines were replaced as were the power brake booster and master cylinder. The front disc brakes were upgraded to more modern single piston calipers and associated rotors design and all suspension bushings, bearings and seals were replaced along with all new brake hoses, cylinder, springs, pads and shoes. The tires and wheels were upgraded to beautiful new chrome 15X7 Magnum 500s with 215/70/15 Eagle GT ROWL Radial tires. Everything on this car works as new from the factory and it rides and drives better than any brand new AMC ever did. The 390 engine has a nice mild lope and the custom exhaust with later model AMC V-8 freeflow manifolds combined with low restriction DynoMax Super Turbo II mufflers has that glorious muscle car sound under normal driving with a deep heavy muscle roar under full throttle. AMC's well known torque link traction control arms keep this car well planted on the ground even under heavy throttle starts and enables breathtaking acceleration from what otherwise feels like a very refined, beautiful and great example of late 60's muscle car. For those unfamiliar with the AMC AMX, it was one of only two or three 60's era muscle cars that handled and cornered well due to its shorter wheelbase and performance tuned suspension. As such, Craig Breedlove and his wife broke 106 continuous 24 hour speed records many of which lasted over the next 20 years. Don't miss an opportunity to own this is a beautiful and fabulous running and driving car that i |
