Vehicle Description This vehicle is located in our San Carlos California Showroom (650) 326-1000.Here in front of you represents a piece of history so interesting that simply writing about this car caps a mile wide grin. Porsche, on top of Can-Am dominance, so pleased with the Team Penske’s brilliance and engineering prowess with the 917 development, made available to Roger Penske and the incredible Champion driver Marc Donahue, two identical 911E 2.4 Targa’s. So folks, here is one of those cars. This is the Sunoco Blue 1973 2.4 Porsche Targa gifted by Roger Penske to his wife Kathy. This car is also wonderfully documented in an article written and photographed by Bob Chapman for Porsche magazine, Excellence, May 2009. The article is called “Wrapped in Blue”. Mark Donahue penned this car in his book “The Unfair Advantage” as the “prototype for IROC Carreras.” He also referred to this car as one 911 he was “kind of jealous” over. This fully restored, super rare and documented Targa was fitted by the Porsche factory with hill climb gears, RS fenders and wide Fuchs’. The icing on the cake was the re-paint by Mr. Penske from factory silver to Roger’s signature color “Sunoco Blue”, before he presented it to his wife as a gift. This car has just over 2,000 ‘sorting’ miles after a ground up restoration that went from bare metal to silver and finally to the signature Penske Sunoco Blue. Roger, pictured with the current owners in the Excellence article, was even so kind as to grace the inside of the gas lid with his signature. This car looks runs and drives as new and also has the California registered license plate “PENSKE”. Great stuff!, Below are some words penned by the current owner, The ’73 Penske Porsche is a 911E Targa with some RS/RSR components on it. Roger Penske and Mark Donahue spec’d out the car to see, conceptually, how the 911 might be as a potential IROC race car. Donahue referenced it in his book “the Unfair Advantage”. The car was later given to Roger Penske’s wife as a daily driver. The car is 1 of 2 built by Porsche for Roger Penske and Mark Donahue. It came with special parts (hill climb gears, RS fenders, wide Fuchs, etc.) ordered from the Porsche factoryDonahue describes this car in his book “the Unfair Advantage” as one he was ‘kind of jealous’ over.It has a little over 2000 ‘sorting miles’ after a complete ground-up restoration. The car was originally silver and Mr. Penske painted it Sunoco Blue over the silver. The restoration brought the paint down to bare metal, silver paint applied, then Sunoco blue. Mr. Penske’s signature is under the gas lid. It was purchased in August ’98 from the RM Auction in Monterey, CA. It has not been publically shown in 10 years (garage kept all this time). All the numbers match. I have “PENSKE” plates for both California and Arizona. It looks and runs perfectly. |
