The 1996 Dodge Dakota is part of the first Dakota generation that started in 1987. It wears the crown of being the first compact pickup manufactured in the US. It is availed in three trims: the Base, WS, and Sport. Available in both 2WD and 4WD, all models came standard with a 2.5 liter inline-four engine, capable of producing 120 horsepower, and mated to a five-speed manual transmission or optional four-speed automatic. Upgrades included a 3.9-liter V6 and a potent 5.2-liter V8. The Dodge Dakota came with standard front antilock brakes and an optional driver-side airbag, a rare option for trucks of this year. Although packed with lesser technology gadgets compared to today's models, its reassuring built quality and performance earned it a unique reputation in the midsize truck segment.
