The 1996 Ford Explorer is part of the SUV's first generation. It was offered in two body styles, a 4-door version and a rare 2-door Sport model. Buyers could choose between two engines: a 4.0-liter V6 delivering 160 horsepower or a 5.0-liter V8 outputting 210 horsepower. Both RWD and 4WD versions were available and all models were paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. The Explorer offered in three trims: XL, XLT, and Eddie Bauer, with the latter being the high-end model which added premium touches. ABS was standard across the lineup, and 4-wheel disc brakes were an optional upgrade. Inside, the Explorer could seat five and offered a cassette player.
