The 1997 Subaru Impreza is part of the model's first generation. The compact vehicle offered three trims: the base, Outback Sport, and 2.5 RS. Engine choices were either a 2.2L flat-4 that made 137 horsepower or a more potent 2.5L flat-4 in the 2.5 RS model that produced 165 horsepower. Both engines were mated with a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic. All models came standard with Subaru's symmetrical all-wheel drive system. The car also offered a reasonably equipped interior with conveniences such as power windows and locks. However, advanced features, such as infotainment systems with connectivity options, weren’t available, reflecting the technology of the time.
