1998 Mercedes-Benz SLK Overview

The 1998 Mercedes-Benz SLK marks the inaugural year of the first-generation SLK. Recognized for its innovative design, the compact luxury roadster featured a retractable hardtop, or 'vario-roof,' that transformed it from a sleek coupe to a sporty convertible. It was powered by a 2.3L supercharged inline-four engine that produced 185 hp and 200 lb-ft of torque, paired with either a 5-speed automatic or a 5-speed manual transmission. Its rear-wheel-drive platform offered engaging performance and handling. Inside, the SLK offered luxury appointments such as leather upholstery, power-adjustable seats, and automatic climate control. Its safety features included antilock brakes and front airbags. However, it lacked some modern tech features we've become accustomed to, such as large infotainment displays or advanced driver aids.
