The 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse was a notable entry in the affordable sport compact car market of its time. Offered in four trims - the RS, GS, GS-T, and GSX, the Eclipse catered to a wide array of customers. The base model, RS, housed a 2.0-liter SOHC 16-valve inline-4 delivering 140 horsepower, while the top-of-the-line GSX model came equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter DOHC 16-valve inline-4 offering a powerful 210 horsepower and 214 lb-ft torque. The GSX model was also known for its all-wheel-drive system which significantly enhanced its handling and performance. A 5-speed manual transmission was standard, with an optional 4-speed automatic. On the inside, the Eclipse had a sporty cabin with focused ergonomics. However, the lack of advanced safety features and dated technology by today's standards are undeniable.
