The 2001 Hyundai Elantra, part of the third generation of this model, is a bargain-priced compact sedan. Its drivetrain is FWD, and it is powered by a 2.0-liter inline-four engine producing 140 horsepower, mated to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Two trims were available: the base GLS and the higher-spec GT. Safety features included frontal airbags and the option of side curtain airbags, with ABS available on GT models. While the Elantra offered decent equipment for its price point such as power windows, keyless entry, and a six-speaker audio system, it had to compete in a crowded market segment and the brand was still building its reputation for dependability at this time.
