The 2005 Subaru Outback marked the beginning of the vehicle's third generation, capitalizing on Subaru's reputation for reliability and all-weather performance. Depending on the trim, it featured either a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 168 horsepower or a turbocharged version with 250 horsepower. The 3.0 R VDC Limited came with a 3.0-liter H6 engine with 250 horsepower. All models were equipped with Subaru's symmetrical all-wheel drive system, a 4-speed or 5-speed automatic transmission, or a 5-speed manual.
