The 2005 Subaru Outback marked the beginning of the vehicle's third generation, capitalizing on Subaru's reputation for reliability and all-weather performance. The vehicle came with four available trims: the 2.5i, 2.5i Limited, 2.5 XT Limited, and 3.0 R VDC Limited. Depending on the trim, it featured either a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine producing 168 horsepower or a turbocharged version with 250 horsepower. The 3.0 R VDC Limited came with a 3.0-liter H6 engine with 250 horsepower. All models were equipped with Subaru's symmetrical all-wheel drive system, a 4-speed or 5-speed automatic transmission, or a 5-speed manual. Safety features included front side-impact airbags, ABS, and traction control. This model year added an upgraded audio system, a new grill design, and increased ground clearance.
