The 2009 Ford Explorer is a midsize SUV known for its rugged, truck-like construction. Part of the fourth-generation (2006-2010), the Explorer came in three trims: XLT, Eddie Bauer, and Limited. All trims offered a 4.0L V6 (210-hp) or a 4.6L V8 (292-hp) with a 5-speed or 6-speed automatic transmission respectively. Standard features included full power accessories and a MP3-capable CD player, while optional packages added more luxury and tech features. Drivers could select either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. Safety features were finished with available stability control, trailer sway control and front-seat side airbags. The Ford Explorer received solid marks for its off-road capabilities and towing capacity, but its fuel efficiency was noted as being below average for its class.
