The 2009 Volkswagen Routan essentially bridges the gap between German engineering and American practicality. It's the German automaker's seven-seat minivan, offered in three primary trims: S, SE, and SEL. Power comes from a 3.8L V6 delivering 197 horsepower in the S and SE trims, while the SEL gets a 4.0L V6 engine that produces 251 horsepower, both paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Inside, the Routan offers entertainment options like an optional rear-seat DVD system, while efforts were also made to offer European-inspired driving dynamics. Despite its VW badge, the Routan does share its underpinnings with the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan, which doesn’t fully deliver on the premium promise the Volkswagen nameplate may suggest.
