The 2014 Cadillac ELR was a bold statement from General Motors in the realm of luxury plug-in hybrids. Built on a Voltec drivetrain similar to the Chevrolet Volt, the ELR features a front-wheel drive electric motor with 157 hp combined with a generator set that pushes output to 217 hp. A 16.5 kWh lithium-ion battery pack offers an all-electric range of about 37 miles, further assisted by a 1.4-liter gasoline engine when needed. The ELR showcases Cadillac's high-tech gadgetry with a stylish, futuristic cabin highlighted with a customizable 8-inch digital gauge cluster and CUE infotainment system with an 8-inch touchscreen, navigation, Bose audio system, and Bluetooth connectivity. Safety features include forward collision alert, lane departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. Although Cadillac only produced the ELR for two years, the 2014 model was the pioneer.
