By 1969, Chevrolet’s first-generation “F-Body” Camaro had truly come of age, with strong sales driven by its handsome styling, huge option list and brilliant racing success. Conceived and built with development spearheaded by Chevrolet’s Vince Piggins as the GM division’s new SCCA Trans-Am racing contender, the RPO Z28 option package was quietly introduced for the Camaro in 1967 to homologate the car for racing. Careful refinements for 1968 and 1969 further enhanced the concept, with the latter showing a slightly restyled front and rear. At its heart, the Z28 featured a high-winding and tough small-block V-8 engine, combining the basic dimensions of the 327 cylinder block and short-stroke 283 crank to yield 302 CI—just inside the SCCA-mandated displacement limit for Trans-Am racing. Carefully developed underpinnings and other race-inspired tweaks maximized the factory-underrated 290 HP output of the Z28.
