Brief History of the Karmann Ghia
First introduced in Europe in 1955 and arriving in the U.S. shortly after, the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Type 14 blended Italian design from Ghia Studios with Volkswagen’s proven Beetle platform. About 450,000 Type 14s were built over its production run, with only 80,000 being convertibles.
Designed more for style than speed, the Ghia delivered reliable performance, clean aesthetics, and exceptional ride quality for the era. While most design elements remained consistent throughout its life, small cosmetic changes — such as taillight shape and bumper styles — mark each generation. Today, the Ghia is an icon of vintage automotive design and a fun, approachable classic to own.
