Debuting later in the 1965 model year, the fastback version of the Ford Mustang (officially called the "Mustang 2+2") joined the coupe and convertible body styles of Ford's incredibly successful new sporty car.
Here we have a 1965 Mustang 2+2 that must be seen to be believed. Bought new by a Doctor in the summer of '65, this Rangoon Red fastback was owned and pampered by him until his passing in 1984. The second, third and fourth owners, all of whom were car collectors, similarly cared for the car, using it sparingly and always keeping it out of the elements and in proper storage.
The original and rock-solid body had one quality respray around 40 years ago that's still gleaming. The chrome and stainless-steel trim likewise look fantastic, while the original and optional "spinner" style wheel covers fitted with modern whitewall radials finish off the car's head-turning curb appeal.
Inside, the original black interior similarly looks as if the car was in a time capsule. The bucket seats are complimented by the optional center console. Other features include the day/night rearview mirror and an aftermarket audio system.
Under the hood is the original and bulletproof 200 cubic-inch inline six. Both the engine and transmission were completely overhauled and the engine compartment is so clean we would eat our Sunday pasta out of it. The brakes and suspension were also refurbished as needed.
Out on the road, this handsome Mustang runs and drives like a meticulously-maintained six-, not sixty-year-old car.
