BACKGROUND
We’ve come across many different GT-R’s (regardless of chassis) recently with diverse motives which shows how versatile these machines really are. This versatility also isn’t something new. Tuners in Japan have been setting these sport coupes up for assorted applications since they were coming off the assembly line in the 90’s. This example shows an excellent hybrid between street drivability and dedicated track capability. An easy driving experience is combined with extensive modifications creating a 500+ hp circuit-style yet streetable 33R.
MOVEMENT
From the inside out this 33R is very well sorted. It’s not overly-modified into a full track machine that’s undrivable on the street – however, it has everything that negates the shortcomings from the factory. A 6-point roll cage with pillar reinforcements, a chassis cross brace and front & rear strut tower braces add stiffness to the chassis. The massive AutoSelect front strut brace stands out in the engine bay. Upgraded suspension arms and sway bars make the 33R more predictable and put the high output RB26 setup under control. These 33R’s definitely aren’t the lightest cars meaning the stopping power loses consistency after repeated hard laps. GREX Alcon collaboration brakes bring consistency and enhanced stopping power to the car.
The powertrain setup matches the rest of the car (or vice versa) in both balance and intensity, which is what we love so much about original Japanese setups – the car works within itself. Power output isn’t over the top to where it exceeds the capabilities of the chassis, suspension and aerodynamics of the car. A TD06 was paired with a Greddy tubular manifold and supporting mods to make a consistent and linear 485whp on 93 octane fuel. Air, oil and water cooling components have been upgraded and a relocation kit for the oil filter makes general service easier but also adds a thermostat. HICAS has also been disabled for reliability. Overall the mechanical setup of this 33R is extremely balanced and not overdone making it a weapon on the track. She pulls quite hard and feels so much more nimble than factory. Turn-in is tight
VISUALS & CONTROLS
This 33R has a clean and original exterior and interior look which screams functionality. A full Top Secret body kit gives aggressive styling paired with an Autoselect carbon wing element and carbon risers. The headlight lenses have been refreshed with a xenon bulb conversion – cleaning up and modernizing the front end. One of the most notable features are the rare 18×10 Panasport G7 wheels. The dark faces paired with the polished lips blend well into the good-condition KL0 sparkling silver paint.
On the interior you’ll find the popular Japanese his/hers seat setup. A Bride Zeta III drivers seat paired with a 4-point Takata harness secures the driver. Assorted Greddy data gauges, a boost controller, turbo timer and lap timer can be found as well. The rear of the cabin is gutted but the trunk is still functional.
