BACKGROUND
Now available is a well-optioned 1999 E38 740i with an extensive ACS7 package from AC Schnitzer’s Japan branch. Built for high speed highway cruising, ACS sorted this example with a plethora of the best modifications offered for the platform that increase response and agility usually not factored into the development of a large saloon such as the E38 Chassis.
SETUP & FEEL
AC Schnitzer specializes in waking up factory examples while maintaining factory class and reliability. The Japan branch The ACS7 package touches practically every system on the car (depending on selected options).
Interestingly, the “ASC7” engine was actually the 3.2L M52 engine offered in the 728i. However, ECU chip tuning was still implemented for the M62 found in this 740i; adding about 30hp to the factory output. Stainless steel silencers were also implemented, adding a bit of tone to the 4.4L V8 up front.
Footwork enhancements are the highlight of the tuning package. Starting with suspension, sport dampers and springs stiffen up the car quite a bit. Additionally, big 6 piston front calipers and 4 piston rears increase stopping ability but retain a stiff pedal. Some big brake conversions add a bit of “mush” to the pedal feel due to a master cylinder to caliper mismatch. Pedal feel in this E38 is still extremely crisp. 19” AC Schnitzer Type IV wheels wearing Nitto NT555 tires add a bit of firmness and road feel compared to a fatter sidewall from a 17” application.
Overall, the ACS treatment makes a 740i feel much smaller and more nimble than it was originally. Is it going to be as twitchy as an M3? No. But does it add a connection to the road that you’d never expect a massive 7 series to have? Definitely. This example could sit at high speeds on the highway with confidence while being able to carve mountain roads with ease. The suspension and brake setup really wakes up the car but it never gets uncomfortable. You get in and drive like any 7er but with sublime road feel and responsiveness that feel like the car has shed a thousand pounds.
VISUALS & CONDITION REPORT
From the factory, this E38 is finished in bright Titan Silver Metallic and offers a black leather cabin. It’s simple, but the bright silver (similar to BMW Glacier silver found on newer chassis) shows nicely in the light or in the dark.
AC Schnitzer treatment makes the 740i look quite aggressive. The 19” Type IV wheels are definitely vintage, highlighting 90’s tuning style. The massive calipers behind them only add to the visual queue. Lower bumper trim from ACS gives the E38 body a more angular look along with extended arches that envelop the large Type IV’s.
On the interior, ACS features their oak wood steering wheel and an ACS badge on the passenger side. Infotainment is provided by a Panasonic Strada system (not functional stateside but still cool)
Regarding condition, paint on the exterior shows quite well. The roof was repainted in March 2025 and the rest of the body shows no major scratches or rock chips. The Type IV’s dont have any chips or rash but the outer lip could use a polishing to bring back shine and clarity. On the interior, the seats and dash are in excellent condition. Air conditioning is fully functional and blows cold. The headliner has no tears but is starting to sag in the rear (extremely common). The engine bay is fairly clean but peeling can be found on the valve covers due to age.. Mechanically this E38 is stout.
