Seller's Notes

1968 Plymouth Fury III Sport Suburban Station Wagon Plymouth yet again delivered in the full size series line up with the Fury and VIP. Standard features include a 318ci V8 or 225ci 6 cylinder engine and the Plymouth Fury I was the lowest priced among the Fury II, Fury III, Sport Fury and VIP. Seventeen different exterior colors are available in the Fury III while the inside is coated in rich fabric and vinyl with color keyed carpeting. Additional options included air conditioning, front disc brakes, textured vinyl roof and an 8 track tape player. Thx oldride.com  For consignment, a 1968 Plymouth Fury III Sport Suburban station wagon with a title verified 142,754 actual miles.  This car is a four time AACA HOPF, (Historical Preservation of Original Features), winner and one of just 9,954 nine passenger Fury III station wagons produced in 1968. This is a piece of rolling Americana and let's get the number one question answered up front. Yes, there is a rear facing third row!  Exterior Gloriously 60's in every way, the long panels are of course adorned with woodgrain applique framed by single stage Matador Red rolling on red 14-inch steel wheels with Plymouth hubcaps. The Fury looks a little furious with the stacked headlights and narrow grille, a squared grimace at the head of a long car, 217 inches in all, with an extended overhang past the rear axle. A flat roofline parallels the shoulder line and between them, glass on glass, a giant greenhouse out from which we watched the world go by, (you know, before iPhones!). The back of the car is a clinic in right angles and a big picture window which would become an entertainment screen for those behind you. The tail lights are integrated into the aluminum bar across the back, low on the body, are fantastic. Imperfections include some scratches, surface rust on the wheels, and just general overall patina that frankly, we wouldn't touch! Interior Like Plymouth cars of the time, grommet accented vinyl door panels with various stitched designs cover the doors and yes, there are ashtrays on the rear door armrests which double as gum wrapper receptacles depending on the age of your passengers. It's crank windows for everyone, and one door is missing a knob. Red vinyl accented with dark side stripes covers the bench seat and our grommets continue to dress things up while a big armrest is center positioned for sharing. The second row bench is no frills but shares the same material and design and also in nice condition and plastic mats that run the expanse of the floor and over the center hump cover the front and second row floor. The back facing third row is a bit narrow and lower, providing ample legroom to end up in a more reclining position and who didn't sit on their knees in front of the rear window making faces at followers? Up front, it's wonderful patina that colors the steering wheel and the instrument cluster cove with a square speedometer to 120 mph, and a number of toggle switches and vent controls on the ribbed metal panel. The standard AM radio is in dash central and maroon loop carpet covers the floor and shows some age, but the long, red perforated headliner is in remarkable condition.  Drivetrain Driver conditions prevail under the hood where the 318ci V8 looks small in the cavernous bay topped by a 2-barrel carburetor and mated to a New Process 3-speed manual, (on the tree), sending power all the way back to the 8¾ inch rear with 3.23 gears. Drum brakes are found front and rear. The bay presents as if you drove this car from 1968 and didn't bother detailing it. And that was the norm!  Undercarriage Amazingly, no invasive rust is to be found. Plenty of surface stuff as expected and some residual oil on the transmission pan and rear differential along with some grease build up around the knuckles are noted. The single exhaust flows through a stock style muffler before finding its end in a steel pipe. Suspension consists of torsion bars up front
