1966 Pontiac GTO Convertible GTO is a very special road machine. So special, in fact, we call it the ultimate tiger, and that's noteworthy considering all Pontiacs are tigers. It packs a 335hp, 389ci V8 up front, and harnesses the energy with a column mounted, all synchro 3-speed transmission, heavy duty clutch, heavy duty shocks, springs and stabilizer bar. The engine doesn't really have to attract any more attention than it does, but our enthusiastic engineering department insisted on dressing it up with chromed rocker covers, low restriction air cleaner, and oil filler cap. From the 1966 Pontiac brochure. For consignment, a 1966 Pontiac GTO convertible with a title verified 35,443 actual miles. This car has been owned by our consignor since 1991 and retains a date correct 389 and is in survivor condition. Exterior It does have two stage Burgundy paint which is a stunning color artistically augmented by the redline tires and white canvas top. The opposing grilles are pure Pontiac and appear on every model in '66 in one form or another and the slit tail lights of the GTO are distinct and inspired the Monkeemobile of George Barris TV fame. Stacked headlights and a hood scoop are now an iconic part of muscle car lore. A white pinstripe is the perfect accent along the shoulder line and rocker panel trim pulls together the wrap-around bumpers, while 14-inch Pontiac Rally I wheels are the ideal shoes for the factory look. The exterior is in superb condition including the brightwork. Imperfections include some typical discoloration of the white top, light hazing to the plastic window, some bubbling on lower panels, uneven filler, faded paint on the GTO emblems, and some chips in the pinstripe at the door handle. Interior Ribbed red vinyl fills the interior beginning with vertically stitched door panels and rear wall, then a tuck and roll pattern on the buckets seats and rear bench, and all is in very good condition. A wash of red continues with loop carpet on the floor, showing some fading on sun exposed spots, but in general good condition, protected by vintage style rubber Pontiac mats in, yes, red! Up front, the red steering wheel shows age with cracks and fading and frames the woodgrain faced instrument cluster, simple and efficient as only 60's cars can be, and showing touches of patina but fully intact. The AM radio in the dash is helped with an FM converter mounted under the dash, right next to the triple gauge cluster also added. The trunk has the period plaid mat and tire cover and presents cleanly. Drivetrain Pontiac blue and chrome colors the engine, here a date-correct 389ci V8 with 325 horsepower with #093 correct heads. Tri-power provides the fuel through three 2-barrel carburetors and behind the powerplant is a TH350 3-speed automatic transmission sending power to the 10 bolt rear axle. Undercarriage Clean and dry conditions persist underneath with some typical road dust and patina. We note two areas where some flaking rust has broken off on underside panels, but that's' the extent of issues. The dual exhaust flows through stock style mufflers on its way to a non showy exit behind the rear bumper. Drum brakes are at all four wheels and suspension consists of coil springs front and rear with a 4 link in the back. Drive-Ability A healthy exhaust note is expelled upon start up and we spin this legend around the test loop where the V8 provides very good power and smooth idling, the car tracks straight, and braking is responsive and uneventful. We find both radios don't work but all other functions provided in and around the car work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase. Looking for a clean, straight, unmodified GTO? How about one with a soft top? Well, this might just be the one you've been waiting for, the perfect cruiser. The und
