1970 Lotus 61 Formula B - Chassis #140
Located in Sarasota, FL
Runs and Drives
-
One of Lotus' highest-selling formula car chassis, the 61 was the Lotus for the beginning racer. Relatively inexpensive, well-designed, and sporting the latest aerodynamic bodywork based on the Lotus turbine-powered Indy car, the 61 was used all over Europe and America in Formula Ford. Such is the case for this 1970 Lotus 61 that was converted to run in Formula B (now Formula Atlantic).
-
This car was originally sold to famous racer and racing school owner Jim Russell without an engine as a rolling chassis#140, with the first entry in its logbook stating that the car was converted to Formula B specifications prior to 1972.
-
It was purchased by BaT regular Mr. Vespa in approximately 2002 and rebuilt from the bare tube frame up over the next decade, using the best mechanical components and most up to date safety equipment possible. It was completed in 2012 and has had three short shake-down track sessions of about 30 minutes each since then. After completing the car Mr. Vespa decided not to jump back into vintage Formula racing so the Lotus went up for sale. It then ended up with Indianapolis, Indiana-based Gary Dausch and restored and finished in the iconic period correct “Gold Leaf” red over white livery.
-
The 1600CC Lotus twin-cam engine was completely rebuilt for maximum power and reliability, and was measured at 187HP on the dyno. It has approximately 3 hours since the rebuild including dyno time. Lotus Twin Cam is a high-performance, dual-overhead-cam (DOHC) engine based on a Ford Kent block.
-
