1995 Mercedes Benz SL320 Convertible That the R129 SL was radically different from its forebear was no surprise given the age of the preceding model and the fact that Mercedes-Benz was never an automaker to worship at the altar of history. Exterior Elvis Presley once said there are only two colors for cars, black and white, and the countless cars he owned often fit that criterion. This Benz is bathed in Polar White and like the shadows cast by icy glaciers, is ringed with gray lower panels. As stormy weather approaches, you can leave the house with the accessory hard top, also in white, forming a rigid weatherproof canopy, while on nice days the potential for open air driving, the black canvas top will do just fine, and it looks great with its three plastic windows. Whatever is up above you, the long nose and short tail will always look sporty wrapped around you and the steeply raked windshield is dramatic with the top down. As are the 17-inch AMG wheels and the fender vents, both giving the car some aggression. Imperfections include some chin scrapes, various scuffs, scratches, and chips, some touched up, and an outbreak of curb rash. Interior Handsome gray door panels include a pleated leather insert, smooth sections, carpet lined lower, and burlwood insert that dresses the seat adjustment switch panel and both door present cleanly. Robust gray leather buckets seats fill the cabin with the seatbelt anchor and housing residing in a column next to each seat. Behind the thick units is a package tray that has more of the soft gray carpet and plenty of room for gym bags, Christmas presents, or your booty from Whole Foods. The gray carpet floods the footwells of course, and is protected by rubber weather mats. But it looks like a double grande espresso might have dripped on the center rise. Meanwhile, the steering wheel and dash are clean and efficient, and the center stack in neatly arranged in a burlwood face plate with push button A/C and an updated AM/FM/CD radio with AUX, USB, and Bluetooth. The shifter and surrounding area look great and the trunk is fully lined and shows some use. Drivetrain When we open the hood, we note only remnants of the insulation pad which distracts us before we note the clean 3.2 liter DOHC inline six cylinder rated at 228 horsepower, fuel injected, and mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission sending power to the rear axle with 3.70 gears. Undercarriage Patina consistent with the age and mileage in the form of typical surface rust, some fluid on the transmission pan and some on a splash guard under the oil pan. Beyond that, clean conditions with the dual exhaust running down the center with some heat shields, finding an original equipment muffler, then exiting out back through twin tips. Four wheel power disc brakes are on board and coil springs suspension is employed on the independent front and rear. Drive-Ability You won't miss the 500SL with this one. The level of comfort is the same and there's more than enough usable power on tap. These are road hugging cars, surefooted and stable, so handling is as good as expected and this car tracks straight.
