Eli's Motorcars is absolutely thrilled to represent this magnificent 1973 BMW 3.0 CS thats been passionately restored & hot-rodded!
I usually write my own descriptions but thought this car warranted one from the owner, personally.
ENJOY!
I'm a 64 year old tugboat captain. I bought my 3.0cs nineteen years ago. It is my dream car.
It's been my dream car for 46 years since I saw it in my friends' driveway.
When I bought it it was carbureted and had a very aggressive cam that was great on the freeway but terrible in town. I spent the first five years working with Carl Nelson of La Jolla Independent making the car drive the way I wanted.
3.5 litre M30
Shrick Cam
Stahl headers
Bosch Motronic fuel injection
Mass air flow meter
Miller performance chip
New fuel injectors
New sport exhaust
5 speed transmission
Front strut tower brace
Bilstein shocks
Carl Nelson Springs
I drove it like crazy as my daily driver for ten years and the salt air in Point Loma, where I live, took its toll. The body rusted and wasted away. The leather seats and rubber seals became hard and cracked. I had to make a decision to sell the car or restore it. I had never before restored a car, but I felt a duty to this wonderful machine that had given me so many great times. I restored it. It took me five years.
I took off all the chrome, lights, windows and rubber seals. I took it down to bare metal and patched and primed the whole car. Len Lochmiller painted it with five coats of German Glaserit paint. I took apart the lights and cleaned and repaired them. All the chrome was replated at Escondido plating. I gutted the interior and dash and added dynamat sound proofing. The seats were reupholstered. The dash was remade by Just dashes, and the wood by Madera products of Goleta. New German square weave wool carpet installed. Finally all new rubber seals and glass was installed.
One of the things that I am most proud of are the improvements that I made to the chassis. These cars are notoriously bendy and are sometimes called flexible fliers. Working with a welder, I brought the frame rails back from under the engine to under the back seats. We replaced the tack welds around the firewall with strong welds. New floor pans were welded in place. It is now solid as a brick.
