1987 Buick Regal Grand National For 21 years, before NASCAR started selling naming rights in 1971, its top stock car racing championship was known as the Grand National, and the name lingered in public usage long after the series officially became the Winston Cup. Ten years later, Darrell Waltrip raced factory backed Buick Regals to claim back to back championships in 1981 and '82. So, it was in keeping with division general manager Lloyd Reuss's thrust to move Buick's image from a maker of cushy doctors' cars to something more youthful and exciting when it unveiled the first Regal Grand National at NASCAR's 1982 Daytona 500. For consignment, a 1987 Buick Regal Grand National with a title verified 29,223 actual miles, a numbers matching drivetrain, and solid roof. While many Turbo Regals have been tweaked over the years, this one remains in mostly stock configuration with the exception of an exhaust system and some light engine bay mods. If you're in the market for an unmolested GN, now's a good time to cash in some of those troy ounces you've been hoarding! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase. Exterior You could have a Grand National in any color you wanted, as long as it was black. T-types and Turbo T's came in other flavors, but inky black is how you wanted the meanest car on the street. This one's in great shape and even the bumper fillers are nice, and the shoulder line is augmented with a double pinstripe which will make it stand out from its brethren, of which more than 20,000 were produced in '87. The pinstripe also encircles the power bulge on the hood which features the SFI Turbo emblem, a coveted piece that in many cases, has been removed. The specific stock wheels look great and carry the factory size tires, showing restraint on behalf of the previous two owners in not bumping that up. Overall, the paint and body are very nice. Imperfections include some typical fading of the headlight bezels, some typical tarnishing of the fender emblem edges, rock chips on the textured rocker panel, and scuffs on the rear bumper end. Interior Even though the factory boost gauge, a series of lights that move to the right as boost builds, is cool, it's not always accurate or easy to read, so the addition of a boost gauge on the A-pillar is a common mod and one we see here. Beyond that, it's stock on the inside with the GN's typical black and gray cloth seats and door panels, clean lines of a vertical dash, and a center stack that takes in the A/C panel and AM/FM/Cassette radio. More right angles are found on the center console where the gray faceplate here is in nice shape, housing the G-body T-handle shifter over clean, black carpet. The gray headliner shows some sag which again is not a surprise as one of the typical occurrences. The trunk is clean, lined in black, and the cardboard cover is still in with the spare! Drivetrain More restraint is shown in the engine bay which is mostly unchanged from new, housing the numbers matching 231ci 3.8 liter V6, turbocharged and intercooled and rated, by GM, with a wink and a nod, at 245 horsepower. It's mated to its numbers matching 200R4 4-speed automatic transmission routing power to the 10 bolt with 3.42 gears without the Positraction option! An open air filter replaces the GM closed unit, the turbo shroud has been painted black, and the powermaster brake unit is still in place in the bay. Undercarriage Driver quality conditions underneath with some surface rust and some residual oil. The dual exhaust features an electric exhaust cut out, then a single pipe splits to enter FlowMaster mufflers, eventually finding its way to the standard steel pipe exits behind each rear wheel. There is no catalytic converter onboard. Power brakes are here as front disc and rear drum and suspension is standard, coil springs up front
