1993 Pontiac Firebird Formula Firehawk In 1991, Pontiac and SLP joined forces to create a new performance RPO code named B4U, aka the SLP Firehawk. This option was first available on the Firebird Formulas, a non Trans Am V8 bird, during the last year of the 3rd generation. When the fourth generation F-body debuted as 1993 models, the Firehawk came along for the ride. A new, sleeker and more aerodynamic body was part of the redesign for all Firebirds, including the Firehawks. Thx newgmparts.com For consignment, a 1993 Pontiac Firebird Formula Firehawk showing 103,416 miles, but the true miles are unknown. What is known is that this is one of just 201 Firehawks produced in 1993 and one of 61 in this color with an automatic. Exterior Bright Red was one of the colors available and the most popular with more than half of the Firehawks wearing the hue. Yellow Firehawk decals on a headlight cover, door panels and rear leave no doubt this is a unique Firebird and special 17-inch wheels also set this bird apart and in 1993, with split exhaust that will differentiate this from later hawks. A hump on the hood contains air scoops up front but if you're at a distance, the car's profile presents as a Formula and will fool you into a challenge, until you get close enough to read the signs! Still, it holds true to Pontiac's performance persona, with a large and nicely integrated horizontal wing over the wide tail lights that wear a darkening black grid, all behind a large, curved rear window. Imperfections are few with some flex cracks on softer panels and clear coat issues on the wheels. Interior Standard Gray coverage on the long door panels with curved plastic forming lower storage around door speakers and both doors present cleanly. Deep and supportive gray leather bucket seats with Pontiac's trademark accordion side bolsters are high backed and clean while the 2+2 in back offers smaller sitting areas in a no frills environment. Our driver's seat shows some slight patina. An ergonomic steering wheel houses an airbag along with some thumb controls on a tilt column that leads to a simple instrument, clear information ahead and no unnecessary distractions. A Kenwood AM/FM/CD player now rests in the center stack, while just below we find the three gray knobs of the A/C panel. The center console is a separate piece, housing the shifter just behind the Firehawk badge, indicating that this is car #072. Gray carpet below provides good coverage while the padded headliner above us is in excellent condition with a few dimples. The cargo area has various levels of storage with varying depths, all finished in soft covered panels. Drivetrain A big air intake fronts the engine bay where we find the 5.7 liter LT1 V8 tucked under the cowl and putting out 300 horsepower. The fuel injected engine is mated to a 4L60E 4-speed manual that sends power to the 10 bolt rear axle with 3.23 gears and Positraction. Undercarriage Driver quality conditions prevail underneath with a good amount of typical surface rust and some road dust along with some residual oil on the rear differential possibly from the pinion seal. Dual exhaust enters a catalytic converter together, snake underneath as one big pipe, enter an original equipment muffler, then split again to exit through conical polished tips with oval openings. Suspension consists of coil springs in the front and a torque arm with coil springs out back and power disc brakes occupy all four wheels. Drive-Ability We roll this Firebird on steroids onto the test loop where it does reliably what F-bodies do, handles well, tracks straights, and hints at 300 horsepower under the hood. The cabin is comfortable and ergonomic and way more racy than your Honda Accord, giving you a youthful rush of exuberance at the wheel! Functionally speaking, we find the power mirrors don't work, the airbag light is on, and the driver's lock switch is broken. Beyond that, all functions operate as they should
