1966 Ford Thunderbird

In the mid-1960s, Ford's Thunderbird had it all -- high style, big V8 power, plush comfort and a choice between coupe and convertible body styles. A subtle hood scoop, heavily sculpted body sides and, for 1966, sequential rear turn signals were just a few highlights of Ford's glamorous "personal luxury" flagship.

Here we have a 1966 Thunderbird convertible that features the rare "Roadster" style removeable hard tonneau cover that, when the hide-away convertible top is lowered beneath the trunk lid, transforms the car into a rakish two seater.

The solid and straight body boasts an older high-quality repaint in the correct Sundust Beige that still looks great. Adding to the 'bird's boulevard appeal is the lustrous original chrome and stainless-steel trim as well as the correct wheel covers fitted to whitewall tires. The convertible top is likewise in very good condition, as is its nice and clear plastic rear window.

Swing open the thick, vault-like door and slide behind the "Swing-Away" steering wheel and you're greeted with a cockpit-style interior that was evidently inspired by the then-new Jet Age. This handsome interior benefitted from a restoration that included new upholstery and door panels. In addition to the expected power steering and power front disc brakes, this Thunderbird features power windows, door locks and driver's seat.

Under the long hood is the original 390 4-Barrel V8 that smoothly puts its 315 horsepower through the "Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission and on to the 3.00-geared rear end. Out on the road, this classic Thunderbird runs and drives beautifully while the dual exhaust adds a tastefully restrained yet muscular soundtrack.
