1,610 miles
1939 Ford 85 Deluxe Coupe A convenient, modern car that carries three comfortably. Especially desirable for business and professional use. Light over rear window with switch on door pillar. Clear Vision Ventilation. Windshield opens. Extra large parcel shelf behind driver's seat. Two luggage compartments. Spare tire mounted vertically in rear luggage space. From the 1939 Ford dealer's brochure. For consignment, a 1939 Ford 85 Deluxe coupe showing 1,610 miles since built. This beauty is a long way from Ford's intent in 1939, and the only similarities it shares with its original marketing material is the outer shape of the car and the fact that this car is desirable for business, but not the traveling salesman type of business originally proposed. No, this car is ALL business, of the street rod variety! Exterior Our eyes are immediately drawn to the shotgun style intake protruding from the hood and it's immediately evident this is not your grandfather's Ford Deluxe, (or maybe it is and you just have a cool grandfather!). The menacing grin of the front grille and lazy eyed look of the headlight bezels are accents to the stunning two stage Dark Blue Metallic paint that adorns this classic with the nose up attitude. It's all business out back not just because it's a business coupe, but as a result of the presence of wheelie bars between the combination of teardrop blue dot lights and chevron tail lights. On the decklid, there are some pinstripe flames to dress things up a bit and that's the only markings that interrupt the deep, blue paint. 15-inch polished American Racing Torque Thrust wheels serve as the shoes here with widely staggered width tires and twin exhaust tips ahead of each rear. A few random scratches and a crack in the paint are the only imperfections. Interior We go from a racy exterior to a pedestrian, almost luxurious interior with button back tan vinyl on the doors opening the portal to a monochromatic interior that takes your blood pressure down a few notches. Cloth bucket seats present cleanly and the palette continues to the package shelf behind them with a few embedded speakers attached. In front, a flame spoked, wood rimmed steering wheel on a tilt column fronts a painted dash housing Dolphin gauges in front and a triplet of auxiliary units under the dash, not far from the AM/FM/CD radio and the whole package is topped by a Marshall tachometer perched on the dash. A B&M shifter rides a center console over blue carpet while a smooth tan headliner rolls all the way back to encircle the rear window. The trunk is large and carpeted and houses a fuel cell and battery. Drivetrain The front clip tilts forward to reveal an impressive looking 454ci V8 with chrome valve covers, coated headers, and dual 4-barrel carburetors on a Weiand tunnel ram intake manifold. Steel braided hoses, colorful AN fittings, and an aluminum radiator dress it up even more! Behind it is a TH350 3-speed automatic routing power the Ford 9 in back. Undercarriage Clean and dry underneath where the dual exhaust travels a short distance from the headers to MagnaFlow mufflers, then turn to the side and exit out each. Front disc and rear drums are how we find the brakes and suspension consists of coil spring up front and leaf springs in back. Drive-Ability We fire up the big 454 and the short exhaust immediately comes to life with an earth shaking roar, just how we like it. On the test loop, it proves to be immensely powerful and quick and we're not about to test the wheelie bars but we're thinking the front end could come off the ground with the right conditions. Meanwhile, she pulls right on braking and a few things were noted as inoperable including the horn, wipers, left turn signal, and radio. All other functions in this street rod work as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time
