The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 2023 Rivian R1S the highest rating of Good in the six original crash tests! The R1S also received a Good rating for how well its headlights illuminate the road. R1s models built after January 2023 were awarded a TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation, the IIHS' highest award.

The R1S can be charged at home or at one of the thousands of public charging stations located throughout the U.S. The SUV's charging port is located near the driver's side front fender. To begin charging, unlock the port by pressing a sensor (indicated by three small lines) on the wheel arch. Then, plug-in the charging cable. The LED light surrounding the port will illuminate and pulse to show that the battery is charging. Charge levels can be tracked via Rivian's smartphone app or the infotainment system.

The R1S has an 11.5-kW onboard charger. R1S models with the 135-kWh battery take around 13 hours to achieve a full charge using a 240-volt (Level 2) outlet or charging station, according to Rivian. That equates to between 16 and 25 miles of range gained for each hour of charging. Using a DC fast charging station, you can add up to 140 miles of range in around 20 minutes! Charging times for the 105-kWh battery have not been released at the time of writing.

The R1S may not be the largest SUV on the road, but it sure makes great use of the available space. The rear cargo area ranges from 17.6 cubic feet with the third row up to 88.2 cubic feet with both the second and third rows down. The seats fold nearly flat, and the folding split tailgate and adjustable air suspension make loading cargo a breeze.

Then there's the big front trunk. It's wide and deep and has an adjustable load floor. The Mercedes EQS SUV and BMW iX don't have frunks at all. In-cabin storage is decent, with nice door pockets and a sizable bin in the center console.

It's plenty capable off-road thanks to the standard four-motor setup and air suspension. and as with the truck, we think Rivian nailed the styling. It looks tough but futuristic, and it doesn't look soft like an EQS or odd like an iX. Few vehicles ooze personality like the R1S,'' Edmunds goes on to proclaim.
