Meanwhile, the Frontier's reputation as inferior to the Tacoma is utter nonsense. The Frontier does everything the Toyota can do with less clatter and more comfort. The Nissan Frontier PRO-4X is a great little truck to own, and an excellent value for a second owner and beyond. It's easy to live with and packs enough capability for most, with a lot more off-road potential.
The IIHS gives the Frontier a “Good” rating for moderate overlap frontal impact, side impact, roof crush protection, and an “Acceptable” rating for how the seats and head restraints protect in a rear-impact collision. Beyond this, you might want to consider getting the 4-wheel-drive model for no other reason than the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) claims it improves the Frontier’s ability to resist a rollover accident. With 4WD, the truck gets a 4-star rating in this regard. The engine provides enough power for climbing hills and merging into traffic, feeling powerful and torquey at all times. Not once will you find yourself wishing for more power. 4.0-liter V-6 with 261 horsepower that provides a powerful and responsive driving experience. The powerband's peak torque is crested around 4,000 RPM. The Frontier is rated for fuel economy of 15 mpg city and 21 mpg highway. If you need to shift into 4-wheel drive, doing so is as easy as twisting a knob. Nissan does have one thing on the GM trucks though, room on the inside for bigger guys, When ordered new, Luxury Package ($2,650), which includes heated leather seats, an 8-way power driver’s seat, a 4-way power front passenger’s seat, heated outside mirrors, a power sunroof, a roof rack with cross bars, and a 5.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, Bluetooth music streaming capability, voice recognition technology, a text messaging assistant, and more. The Frontier PRO-4X includes skid plates, off-road Bilstein suspension performance shocks, a locking rear differential, and, hill descent control and hill start assist. Special 16-inch aluminum wheels are also part of the PRO-4X treatment, and they’re wrapped in brand new P265/75R16 tires. Notably, when you exit the truck after dark, the rear bed light comes on automatically, making it easier to see at night. Lock the doors with the remote, and the light shuts off, or times out on its own. The cargo bed measures just 59.5 inches in length, half an inch short of five feet long. There is an optional bed extender that helps accommodate longer cargo, maybe even a dirt bike, and this truck has both a factory spray-in bedliner and a Utilitrak bed channel system with four adjustable tie-down cleats. The maximum towing capacity measured 6,100 pounds, and the maximum payload measured 1,078 lbs. Though it doesn't have the power or luxury of a full-size truck, the Frontier can haul, tow, and play just as hard."
