The Cadillac Fleetwood name originated from the independent Fleetwood Metal Body Company of Fleetwood, Pennsylvania, which produced custom luxury automobile bodies in the early 20th century. The original Cadillac Fleetwood plant was founded in 1909, known for high-quality custom coachwork for Packard, Cadillac, and others, before Fisher Body, a GM division, bought it in 1925 and moved operations to Detroit by 1931, but the Fleetwood name became synonymous with Cadillac's luxury cars. The PA facility (at 69 S. Franklin St.) closed, but the name lived on in GM for decades as a top-tier Cadillac trim.
