Seller's Notes

1959 Chevrolet Speedster On the Speedster Downunder Facebook page, a site with over 20,000 members, the question was raised by a member, Can anyone tell me what makes a speedster a speedster?. Once response went further. A roadster is a factory body with 2 doors, fold down roof, side curtains, and a boot, (either a standard boot or a dickie seat). The addition of wind up windows makes it a cabriolet. A pointed tail makes it a boat tail. A speedster is a modified standard car with one or two seats designed primarily for racing, but may also be road going. Usually without a roof, though this is optional. For consignment, a 1959 Chevrolet Speedster showing 42,652 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This car combines elements of Fords, Chevys, Studebaker, Plymouths and more to present as a one off, custom built example put on a 1959 Chevrolet 3100 pickup chassis and is titled as such. Exterior Shades of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang here as unique lines, panels, and features adorn this custom car and like a puzzle, onlookers will try to identify this car piece by piece. That's a '35 Ford grille up front flanked by Studebaker headlights, dual horns, and foglights perches on the wide bumper. But it's the profile that will have people scratching their heads, but once they learn of the 3100 truck chassis below, it makes more sense. The cab sits high above the running boards which in turn connect exaggerated wheel openings and tractor fenders, along with a broad side panel, all in black with red and white pinstripe framing. It almost wants to be a boat tail, but a rear trunk is provided instead and a spare tire is out back amongst the decorative bumpers. She rides on 16-inch wheels with LT rated truck tires. Imperfections include chipping and cracking paint throughout, wear on the painted running boards, and areas of dull paint. Interior Saddle vinyl door panels include some ornamental pinstriping and open pockets. Inside, an oxblood bench seat awaits and it has some rough spots with patches, repairs, and taped spots. A 60's era steering wheel fronts a dash coated in more saddle vinyl with an array of gauges including some Stewart Warner units across the middle over a slew of labeled toggle switches. An AM/FM radio is mounted underneath and a shifter snakes its way from the floor to close to the seat and the patchwork floor is painted bright red. Drivetrain The red theme continues under the '35 Plymouth hood where it shines brightly on a 235.5ci inline six cylinder, rated at 135 horsepower and fueled with a 1-barrel carburetor. It's backed by a 4-speed manual transmission that sends power to the rear axle and 3.38 gearing. The bay presents cleanly. Undercarriage Here's that 1959 Chevrolet 3100 chassis and it's gleaming in its monochromatic presentation as everything is red. Drum brakes are found front and rear as are leaf springs. The single exhaust cleanly runs into a glossy red Cherrybomb muffler and finds a rear exit via a chrome tip. No errant fluids or apparent rust was noted, although some corrosion on the running board braces has been painted over. Drive-Ability Not sure how this would do in races, but it's one wild ride that has you sitting up high and looking out over the long Plymouth hood. The inline 6 runs well and delivers a smooth ride as the tall sidewalls of the tires temper any road imperfections. All functions available on this one of a kind work as intended and it's time to bring this topless wonder inside for showroom presentation. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase. Custom builds create unique rides and this one has it all in spades! The only question you'll need to answer is in which class do you enter it? Truck, domestic, roadster, or racer. If you've ever wanted one of one, this Speedster may be your dream delivered! 3A59N102171 3A-
