1972 Ford Thunderbird Hardtop The 1972 Thunderbird. Redesigned from the insides out. Precise in its handling, superlative in its ride. A magnificent new personal automobile. Personal in its luxurious appointments as well. In its distinctive trim. Don't you owe yourself a personal encounter with this magnificent new Thunderbird? From a 1972 print ad. For consignment, a 1972 Ford Thunderbird hardtop with a title verified 25,890 actual miles. This amazing survivor now has new exhaust, a new carburetor, and some other fresh additions that render this vintage Thunderbird road worthy and show worthy! Exterior Brown was in during the early 70's and our example wears a coat of Dark Brown Metallic, augmented by a gator grain vinyl top in very good condition that covers the roof with its ornamental Landau bars. Leading the way in the front are dual headlights on each side within ribbed bezels that mirror the grille configuration and fenders capped by marker lights. Out back, Ford retains the epic lightbar presentation started in the 60's, the red lens running the width of the latch panel and adorned with a red winged Thunderbird emblem, absolutely cool. In profile, the narrow windows rest behind a raked windshield and large and in-charge nose while full wheel covers dress the 15-inch wheels wrapped in white wall tires with an early 2024 date code. It's here we note the 70's trend of large overhangs bookending those wheels, classic styling by today's standards. Overall, paint and bright work is very nice. Imperfections include various scratches and chips, minor blistering behind a rear wheel, and de-plating on a bumper bolt. Interior Entering the luxury era for the Thunderbird this car uses heavily padded Ginger vinyl which covers the uppers of the door along with some chrome trimming, woodgrain inlay, and carpeted lower, both doors presenting cleanly with button tufting that picks up on the upholstery. Yes, the buttoned Ginger vinyl bucket seats are up front, a bench in back, and all appear in remarkable condition. A dark brown motif is utilized for the steering wheel and dash with just enough silver and woodgrain trim to add some class, and it all appears clean and original, including the AM/FM radio. Thick tan carpet floods the floor and a tan headliner includes shoulder belts, dome light, and a hook for your dry cleaning. An ash gray mat covers the trunk and a spotless spare resides in the compartment. Drivetrain Super clean and original is how we find the 429ci V8 under the hood in all its Ford Blue glory, rated at 212 horsepower and now with an Edelbrock 600cfm 4-barrel carburetor, according to our consignor. It's mated to a C6 3-speed automatic transmission sending power the Ford 9 axle with 2.75  gearing and TracLoc. The wires, plugs, and battery are newer. Undercarriage A new gas tank and dual exhaust is evident and that exhaust travels through stock style mufflers and exits through polished tips under the chrome bumper. Esthetically, the rest of the underside shows typical surface rust, paint peel and age but nothing unexpected and structurally solid.  Power brakes are on board as front disc and rear drums and suspension includes coil springs in front and a 4 link with coil springs out back. Drive-Ability The seats are slippery at first, but their soft padding welcomes you in as we take our position in the bucket seats and crank up the big V8 which emits a touch more bravado than the original single exhaust could muster. The 75 series tires do a great job at squelching road imperfections and the car tracks straight. The heater/AC is not working and the radio will not play Roberta Flack nor Mac Davis, but all other functions in this well preserved '72 work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase. If there's ever been a car that re
