History & Significance
This 1965 Ford F-100 Custom Cab factory 4x4 long bed is a highly desirable and well-documented example of one of the most intriguing production anomalies in Ford truck history—the “Wrongbed.”
For the 1965 model year, Ford introduced its new uni-body design, integrating the cab and bed into a single structure. While suitable for two-wheel-drive trucks, this design proved incompatible with the frame flex required for four-wheel-drive use. With no revised bed tooling available at the time, Ford Motor Company installed earlier-style beds on factory 4x4 models, resulting in what enthusiasts now refer to as the Wrongbed.
This truck was built in San Jose, California, and sold new in Napa, California. It is a rare survivor, retaining an exceptional level of originality, including all factory drivetrain components and their corresponding identification tags—features seldom seen intact today.
To accommodate four-wheel-drive clearance, Ford fitted these trucks with F-350 dually front fenders, resulting in noticeably larger wheel openings than standard two-wheel-drive F-100s—another hallmark detail of the Wrongbed configuration.
Notably, this example still wears all of its original glass, including the windshield, along with its original Kelsey-Hayes steel wheels bearing correct Ford markings. Even the firewall retains its original production-line paint markings, further underscoring its authenticity.
The truck shows 115,000 original miles and has been driven approximately 10,000 enjoyable miles since a mechanical restoration completed in 2022. The original owner used the vehicle recreationally, fitting it with an Alaskan Camper and driving it to Alaska for fishing trips while towing a small boat. The whereabouts of the camper are unknown, but the truck’s history speaks to its durability and intended purpose.
Produced in very limited numbers and now increasingly sought after, factory 4x4 Wrongbed F-100s occupy a special place in Ford history. This example offers collectors a rare opportunity to acquire an unmodified, historically significant truck with remarkable originality and documented provenance.
