1986 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z28 In fact, it was excellent controllability that gave the IROC-Z its big advantage at Willow Springs. The Z's nearly neutral cornering balance and ability to segue smoothly from understeer to oversteer made driving on the track easy. In long sweeping corners, it was a cinch to choose a line and set the car's attitude by gently caressing the throttle. Upon exiting the bend, more power, along with a bit of opposite steering lock, kept the Z pointed in the desired direction without breaking traction at the rear wheels. Car and Driver, when comparing the IROC with Mustang LX 5.0, July 1986 For consignment, a 1986 Chevrolet Camaro IROC Z28 with a title verified 18,368 actual miles. This is a garage kept, two owner car that's had a recent tune up that presents in stock configuration with exception of a cat back system. Exterior Its original paint remains, according to our consignor, and it's GM's Flame Red that graces the panels of this F-body adorned with its original stripe package which includes the now iconic IROC font and lettering at the base of the door. Z28's also benefit visually from cladding on the lower edge of the car and five spoke wheels here wrapped in 245/50R16's with a late 2023 date code. Fog lights are tucked into the recesses of the fascia and louvered hood vents immediately set the Z apart from mere mortal Camaros. Black trimmed, multi sectional tail lights top a striped bumper cover over, in this case, a pair of big twin tips on each side. It's all in very nice shape with imperfections limited to some rock chips, a small scratch, scuff on the rear bumper and cladding. Interior Gray and black angled tweed cloth adds some visual interest to the otherwise straightforward door panels and both present cleanly. Inside, the front bucket seat configuration shows the same striped cloth with charcoal and along with the rear 2+2, are in great shape. A black console and simple design, by today's standards, house all the critical instrumentation, as well as climate controls, and while originally a radio delete car according to our consignor, it now hosts a period correct Alpine AM/FM/Cassette radio. A round handled shifter rises over black plastic base plates in immaculate condition, all over clean low pile charcoal carpet which also coats the rear cargo area under the hatch. Drive-train Presenting cleanly under the hood is the 305ci LB9 V8, rated at 190 horsepower and fueled by injection. It's mated to GM's ubiquitous 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the 10 bolt rear with 3.23 gears and Positraction. Undercarriage Other than some age induced surface rust, there's not much to complain about underneath as it's nicely preserved and dry. The single exhaust travels through a Hooker Aerochamber which emits two tailpipes and four chrome tips. Coil springs are found front and rear with a torque arm aiding the rear suspension while four wheel power disc brakes are onboard. Drive-Ability If you try and ignore today's average horsepower rating, you'll understand that even the 305 puts out a performance level power for the mid 80's and there's no denying the aesthetic attributes that make this a performance F-body as well. The car rides like a fresh IROC with great handling, a comfortable cockpit, and excellent visibility. There may be a crossed wire with the third brake light which is on when the brake is not applied, and disappears when you step on the pedal. Beyond that, all functions operate just like they did when you were in high school. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase. You've either pined for one of these, or you had one and regret selling it. There's no middle ground as this was one of the hot cars of the mid 80's. Here's a fantastic example with low mileage, clean inside and out, and appr
