4WD!!! HARD TO MATCH!!! LOCAL OWNER!!! 115,200 MILES!!! LOADED!!! LANE DEPARTURE ALERT!!! BACK UP CAMERA!!! RUNNING BOARDS!!! TOWING PACAKGE!!! AND MORE!!! PLEASE HURRY!!! WILL NOT LAST LONG!!!Although its overshadowed by glorified American pickups, the 2018 Tundra butters its bread with the Toyota nameplate and off-road dexterity. Unlike U.S. rivals, the Tundra is a V-8-only lineup; theres a standard 4.6-liter V-8 and an optional 5.7-liter that uncorks 401 lb-ft of torque. Both pair with a six-speed automatic and rear- or four-wheel drive. Packing in people is easy with a cavernous crew-cab interior; too bad it disappoints with lackluster quality and a dated design. Likewise, the Tundras bulbous body stands out, but its look has grown long in the tooth. Toyota has kept its aging pickup relevant via steady updates, such as this years additions of standard active safety features. Still, the Tundra remains a modest pickup-truck option until its much-needed major makeover.Compared with newer and more advanced powertrains, the Tundras engines and sole transmission are positively prehistoric. Its top V-8 hasnt been updated since George W. Bush was president, and its automatic transmission only offers six gears. The base engine is a 4.6-liter that makes 310 horsepower and 327 pound-feet of torque; the optional 5.7-liter V-8 is good for 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. Rear-wheel drive is standard and four-wheel drive is optional for both setups, but not for all cab-and-bed configurations. Weve spent many hours with the Tundras larger engine. Its reasonably peppy and can be quite quick. Apply a heavy foot to the throttle, however, and the big V-8 emits a leaf-blower-like noise. The six-speed automatic shifts slowly and is outdated compared with its rivals eight- and 10-speed automatics. Driving the Tundra is like listening to CDsits tolerable, but it still feels like a blast from the past. While it isnt terrible to drive, it does feel archaic compared with the competition. Due to its firm suspension, every bump is transmitted into the Tundras cabin. This makes for a lumpy ride over rough surfaces, and really harsh bumps feel violent. The upgraded shocks on the TRD Pro and models with the TRD Off-Road package marginally improve the ride quality. At least these dampers decrease body motion and handle bumpy roads better. Those in search of the best-riding pickup will prefer the Ram 1500 equipped with its optional air-ride suspension.
