By the early 1960s, the Impala was Chevrolet's best-selling model, and in 1961 Chevrolet introduced the Super Sport (SS) package, initially as a limited-production performance trim. Following the passing of the family patriarchs, the car was included in the estate and sold along with the Michigan property around 2011. The second owner continued the tradition, maintaining and enjoying the car at the same location before relocating it to St. Louis, Missouri in 2021. Later that year, it was sold to a particularly fitting third caretaker, the original owner's airplane pilot, who had loaded and unloaded the family's luggage into the Impala's trunk during summers in the 1980s. Each of the three owners shared a deeply personal connection to this unique car. Mechanically, the Impala has been recently serviced in December 2025, including a new intake manifold gasket, rebuilt Rochester carburetor with a new choke tube, new valve cover gaskets, fresh drive belts, engine oil and filter, coolant system flush with new thermostat and temperature sending unit, brake cleaning and adjustment, and a resealed air-conditioning system converted to R134a refrigerant. Sensible updates include the addition of front and rear seatbelts and a conversion from the original generator to a modern alternator, improving reliability while retaining a stock appearance. Of note, while the car was parked in storage, the hood had approximately 4 areas where bird droppings stayed too long resulting in some lifting of the paint finish.
