The C5 Corvette is one of the most important generations in the car's history, and it almost never happened. GM came within arm's length of canceling the program entirely before a group of engineers and executives inside the company fought to keep it alive. What they saved was a car that debuted to widespread praise, won Motor Trend Car of the Year and North American Car of the Year for 1998, and rewrote what people expected from an American sports car. Under the hood is the 5.7 liter LS1 V8 backed by a four-speed automatic. The LS1 was the first of GM's third generation small block LS engines, a platform that would go on to become one of the most celebrated performance engine families in history. The glass roof lets light pour into the cabin and gives the car an open, airy feel without fully giving up the structure of a coupe.
The C5 was also the last generation of Corvette to wear pop-up headlights, a feature that had been part of the car's identity for decades. When the C6 arrived in 2005 with fixed headlights, that era quietly ended. That makes the C5 a natural collector car, sitting at the crossroads of old school Corvette character and modern performance capability.
