The Shelby "Rent-A-Racer" program, which started in 1966 as a partnership between Shelby American and Hertz, gave people the chance to rent race-ready GT350H Mustangs for just $17 per day and $.17 per mile. Initially intended as a promotion for the Hertz Sports Car Club, it soon became popular with weekend racers who would use the cars for drag races or SCCA events. Carroll Shelby and Hertz general manager Peyton Cramer agreed on a deal for around 1,000 specially modified GT350s—with sources reporting either 999 or 1001 vehicles produced.

The car shipped to Eger Motors, PA on 3/24/1966, arrived for dealer prep on 4/11/1966, and was delivered to Hertz with a broken antenna and 0 miles for a total of $3,794.75 (including options and fees). It was later sold to Foss Motors on 8/18/1967.
