In 1970, Dodge launched the Challenger into the most competitive muscle car market Detroit had ever seen and came out swinging. The R/T, which stood for Road and Track, was the performance model of the lineup, and 1970 was the year that the Challenger nameplate reached its absolute peak. Dodge built just over 76,000 Challengers that year, and of those, only around 18,500 wore the R/T badge. This one is finished in Plum Crazy, which was part of Dodge's High Impact color palette, a lineup of colors specifically engineered to be impossible to ignore. It worked then and it works now. The black vinyl top and black leather interior against the purple exterior is exactly the combination this car was born to wear.
Under the hood is a 2016 5.7 liter Hemi V8 producing 370 horsepower, backed by a five speed NAG-1 automatic transmission fitted with an SGE harness and ECM. The drivetrain is controlled by a Hotwire Auto main harness and ECM and an American Autowire body harness, meaning the electrical foundation of this car is fully modern and sorted from one end to the other. A 3:55 rear end puts the power down the way it should. This is a restomod built to be driven, not trailered, and the drivetrain reflects that intention completely.
Inside, the Hellcat seats and console give the cabin a level of comfort and support that no original 1970 interior could match. Dakota Digital analog gauges keep the look period correct while giving you a modern, accurate read on everything under the hood. Vintage Air climate control, an Ididit steering column, a wood steering wheel, interior wood trim, R/T trunk carpet, and a custom trunk mat built by Doug and Colby Jones round out a cabin that is finished all the way to the corners. The headliner and vinyl top are also their work. Randy Oswald handled the paint, and Retro Sound takes care of the audio.
The suspension is a full RMS AlterKtion and Street-Lynx coilover setup by Reilly Motorsports, with Wilwood six-piston disc brakes and rack and pinion steering. This is not a suspension refresh. It is a ground-up rethink of how this car handles, stops, and feels, and the result is a Challenger that drives with the confidence and composure of a modern performance car while looking exactly like 1970. Only 1,100 miles have been put on since the frame-off restoration was completed, and a large box of build sheets, service manuals, information packets, and receipts comes with the car to document every decision that went into it.
