The Porsche 944 arrived as the car Porsche built to prove they could compete at the entry level without compromising on what the badge meant. The engine was developed from one bank of the 928's aluminum V8, the chassis used a rear-mounted transaxle for near-perfect 50-50 weight distribution, and the handling was good enough that automotive journalists regularly used it to embarrass far more expensive cars on track days. The 1986 model was the first full year to benefit from a comprehensive mid-cycle update that Porsche introduced partway through 1985, bringing a redesigned interior, better seats, a new steering wheel, and meaningful mechanical improvements to the engine including revised valves, pistons, and combustion chambers that added 15 horsepower. This one is finished in Guards Red, the color most people picture when they think of this car, with light tan leather inside and a black dash, steering wheel, and center console that give the cabin a clean, driver-focused contrast.
Under the hood is the 2.5 liter inline four backed by a five speed manual transmission. The 944 was not built around straight-line speed. It was built around balance, precision, and the feeling you get when a car does exactly what you ask of it every single time. The rear transaxle layout distributes weight evenly front to rear, and the result is a car that changes direction with a confidence and responsiveness that front-heavy sports cars of the era simply could not match. A recently replaced master cylinder and clutch mean the drivetrain is fresh and sorted.
Inside, the light tan leather interior is clean and well kept with Porsche carpeted floor mats still in place. The black dash and center console keep the cockpit focused and period-correct, and the whole interior reflects the update Porsche put into the 1986 model. It is a comfortable and well-thought-out place to spend time.
In 1986, Porsche launched the 944 Turbo Cup racing series, the first one-make racing series in the company's history, built entirely around the 944 platform. The fact that Porsche trusted this car to carry their name in motorsport tells you everything about how seriously they took it. Clean Guards Red examples with the five speed manual are the ones collectors go looking for, and the 1986 in particular carries the distinction of being the first year with the full updated specification.
