Chevrolet introduced the Camaro in 1967 with one specific goal: build something that would go out and beat the Ford Mustang. They offered it in enough configurations to cover every buyer from casual cruiser to serious racer, and the RS/SS combination was the sweet spot that enthusiasts went straight to. The Rally Sport and Super Sport packages could be ordered together, and that combination quickly became one of the most iconic configurations of the entire first generation. The RS brought the electric hideaway headlights that gave the front end a clean, unbroken look unlike anything else on the road. The SS brought the big block, the heavy-duty suspension, and everything else that backed up the badges. This example is finished in Sequoia Green with black SS stripes and has been built into a restomod that honors that heritage while taking it considerably further.
Under the hood is a 396 cubic inch big block V8 producing 525 horsepower, fed by a Holley Sniper EFI system that delivers the tunability and reliability of modern fuel injection while keeping the classic look of a carbureted engine. Hooker headers flow into a full 2.5 inch exhaust that gives it the voice to match. The original four-speed has been replaced with a Tremec five-speed, and a Ford 9 inch rear end with Moser axles handles everything the engine can produce. Speedway Motors four-wheel disc brakes bring it to a stop with the same authority the engine moves it forward.
Inside, the new black houndstooth interior is period-correct and sharp, one of the most recognizable patterns in Camaro history. Dakota Digital tach and gauges give you a modern, accurate read on everything under the hood. A tilt steering column, SS leather-wrapped steering wheel, interior wood trim, and a Retro Sound stereo round out a cabin that is finished and comfortable without losing any of the character that makes a first-generation Camaro special.
The 4 inch raised steel cowl hood, 2 inch mini tubs, and front and rear LED lighting are the kind of details that separate a thoughtful build from a parts-store project. The electric hideaway headlights that came with the RS package are intact and working, which is always worth noting on a car this age.
The Camaro name is currently on hiatus with no confirmed return date. That has done nothing but draw more attention and more money toward clean, well-built first-generation examples like this one.
