The Toyota Mirai runs on hydrogen fuel and is highly misunderstood by the public. These are built in Japan on a Lexus platform using very high-end materials and workmanship. The tremendous devaluation is solely due to fuel infrastructure:
California Only: Hydrogen fuel is currently only available in CA. While a national network was initially planned, the industry shifted focus to electric vehicle (EV) charging networks.
The 15-Year Expiration Date: These vehicles are produced with a fuel tank expiration date stamped right on the fuel door. After that date, the tank cannot legally be refilled, and replacement is cost-prohibitive. For this specific Mirai, that date is May 2036 (giving you a decade of use). Note: This is similar to EVs, where batteries naturally degrade over time and become financially impractical to replace.
Who is a good fit for a Toyota Mirai?
1 Local Drivers: Someone who drives locally, doesn't rack up heavy monthly mileage, and will keep the car strictly in CA.
