Ford sold nearly one million F-Series trucks in 1978, the best year in the nameplate's history up to that point, and it is easy to understand why when you look at what they were building. The sixth generation F-Series was a significant redesign from the ground up, with wider bodywork, extensive use of galvanized sheet metal to fight corrosion, and a lineup of engines that gave buyers serious choices. The Ranger trim was Ford's mid-level package, sitting between the base Custom and the top-tier Ranger Lariat, and it brought a noticeably more refined level of fit and finish than the bare-bones work truck crowd was used to. This one is finished in yellow with a blue two-tone top, blue leather interior and blue carpet, and a blue dash, a color combination that is bold, cohesive, and completely period-correct for the late 1970s custom truck era.
Under the hood is a built 460 cubic inch big block V8 backed by a three speed automatic, the largest engine available in the F-150 lineup that year. The F-150's heavy-duty class weight rating actually allowed Ford to sidestep certain emissions regulations that applied to lighter vehicles, which meant this truck got to keep the big engines while smaller trucks were being strangled by the rules of the era. The 460 has been built for more than stock performance, and the rebuilt transmission and transfer case back it up properly. A six inch lift on mud hog tires, painted undercarriage, and dual side exit exhaust round out a truck that is set up to go places and look good doing it.
Inside, the blue leather interior and blue carpet are clean and well done throughout. A black steering wheel, aftermarket radio, and the camper bed storage compartment give the cabin a practical, well thought out feel. The silver painted rear bumper finishes the exterior with a clean contrast that suits the yellow and blue color theme.
The late 1970s were the peak era for the custom truck movement in America, when buyers were ordering two-tone paint, lifted suspensions, and personalized interiors straight from the dealership or building them immediately after. This F150 captures that spirit completely, finished in a color combination that turns heads at every show it attends and drives the way a built big block four-wheel drive truck from this era should.
