The 2016 BMW i3 Range Extender (REx) is a series plug-in hybrid that uses an electric motor for all propulsion while utilizing a small gasoline engine as an onboard electrical generator.
Key Specifications & Mechanics: Propulsion: 170-horsepower electric motor that drives the rear wheels. Generator: A 647-cc (0.65-liter) two-cylinder gasoline engine (sourced from BMW Motorrad scooters) sits next to the electric motor in the rear. Fuel Capacity: A 1.9-gallon fuel tank extends driving distance. Electric-Only Range: Roughly 72 miles on a single charge. Total Range: Increases to approximately 150 miles with the range extender active.
How It Works: Series Hybrid Design: The engine never physically connects to or drives the wheels. Its only purpose is to act as an electric generator that maintains the state of charge in the battery.
Operation Trigger: When the battery reaches about 6-9% capacity, the generator automatically kicks in to maintain the remaining charge level.
Manual vs Automatic Trigger: US models are programmed to turn on automatically when the battery is low, but owners sometimes use third-party tools (like BimmerCode) to engage it earlier.
