The Hellcat name was borrowed from the Grumman F6F Hellcat, a World War II Navy fighter plane, and the engine that carries the name was developed under a secret internal project called Operation Tomcat that almost never got approved. When Dodge finally revealed it, the response was overwhelming and demand far exceeded anything they had anticipated. The 2016 Challenger SRT Hellcat is the most powerful American muscle car ever built at the time of its production, and this one is finished in Pitch Black Clearcoat with a black interior from one end to the other. Blacked out, fully equipped, and freshly serviced in May 2026.
Under the hood the 6.2 liter supercharged Hemi V8 produces 707 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque, backed by the TorqueFlite 8HP90 8-speed automatic. This transmission was developed specifically to handle the Hellcat's output and shifts in just 160 milliseconds, faster than any human hand can change gears with a manual. Street, Sport, and Track modes change the shift speed, throttle mapping, and steering feel to suit the situation, and steering wheel paddle shifters keep the driver in control of every gear change when the mood strikes. The Hellcat also comes with two key fobs. The red one unlocks all 707 horsepower. The black one limits it to 500. It is the kind of detail only Dodge would think of.
Inside, the Premium Laguna Leather SRT seats are clean and well appointed with heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, dual climate control, and six-way power driver seat adjustment. The cabin is dark, focused, and built around the experience of driving something with this much power.
The Brembo six-piston high performance brake system on this car featured 15.4 inch two-piece rotors when it was introduced, the largest front brake package ever offered on any Fiat Chrysler vehicle at the time. Stopping 707 horsepower required a serious commitment from the engineering team, and this system delivers. The Challenger itself is no longer in production, and the window on finding well-kept Hellcat examples in desirable configurations is narrowing every year.
