2004 was the final year of the C5 generation, and Chevrolet made sure the Z06 went out as the best version of itself. Chevrolet took the 2004 Z06 to the Nürburgring and used the data from testing on that 14-mile circuit to revise the damping on the Sachs shock absorbers, stiffen the upper control arm bushings, and tune the rear anti-roll bar for more precise handling during high-speed transitions. The result was the most polished and track-ready C5 Corvette ever built, finished in black over the Z06-specific black leather interior, with the six speed manual transmission that was the only gearbox the Z06 was ever offered with.
Under the hood is the 5.7 liter LS6 V8 producing 405 horsepower. In 2004 that put the Z06 on equal footing with the Ferrari 360 Modena on the track, a car that cost roughly three times as much. The four wheel independent suspension, power front and rear disc brakes, and the revised Nürburgring-tuned chassis make this a car that delivers on every number it claims. The LS6 pulls hard from any RPM and rewards the driver who is willing to push it, which is exactly what the Z06 was designed to do.
Inside, the Z06-specific black leather interior is clean and well equipped with the memory package, dual climate control, heads-up display, cruise control, and six-way power driver seat. The five-spoke aluminum wheels are the correct Z06 specification and suit the black exterior well.
The C5 was the last production car in the world to wear pop-up headlights, a distinction it shares with the Lotus Esprit, though the last C5 came off the line in July 2004, outlasting the Esprit by several months. When the C6 arrived with fixed headlights, an era ended. The 2004 Z06 is the final and finest expression of that era, and a black example with the six speed and the Nürburgring-tuned suspension is exactly what the serious C5 market has been focused on.
