The Imperial name was used on various high-end models until 1955 when Chrysler registered it as separate division under the Chrysler Corporation, much as Ford would do with Lincoln two years later. Unfortunately, the public perceived the car as a Chrysler, which resulted in poor sales for the unique, high-quality marque. This wild 1961 Imperial Crown Southampton Hardtop Sedan is an outstanding example of these unusual automobiles. Beneath the expansive hood is a Mopar masterpiece, the stout 413 V8, which moves this big sled with alacrity. Additional features include power steering, power brakes, A727 TorqueFlite automatic transmission with push button control, correct paint and trim codes, torsion bar front suspension, Jetson's-like square steering wheel and dash layout, dual exhaust, 2.93 highway gears, AM radio, rare electroluminescent dash lighting, and 225/75R15 tires wrapped around steel wheels with correct polished covers. The famous stylist Virgil Exner was responsible for wild styling cues like the free-standing headlights, tail lights, and massive fins.
