33,783 miles
1969 Nova SS396 2 Door Sedan Not only did the SS 396 stuff big power into a 3400 pound package, it put just 55 percent of its heft on the front axle, a favorable weight balance few muscle cars could match. Even so, torque and tire slip conspired to quell the bite off the line. Cheater slicks solved the problem. True, they may have given away the Nova SS 396's true mission, but its cover was blown the moment the L78 fired up, anyway. Musclecars.howstuffworks.com For consignment, a 1969 Chevrolet Nova SS396 2 door sedan with a title verified 33,783 actual miles. This car retains its numbers matching drivetrain and comes to you with the Protect-O-Plate.  Exterior A stunner in single stage Burgundy paint, this has the lines of your X-bodied GM commuter car of the day with simple features and vanilla styling. Then you notice the SS emblems, the blacked out grille, and on this car, a raked stance your grocery getter likely didn't have. The 14-inch wheels are color matched to the car with dog dish hubcaps masking the true potential of this legendary muscle car. Vents on the hood, strictly decorative, are another clue to the car's pedigree and 396 is clearly displayed next to the side markers, and that's the first place you should look when it pulls next to you at a red light. Our black vinyl top is in great shape and a white pinstripe runs down the side of the car for a little extra accenting, while out back, the tail lights are visually connected by a black band across the latch panel. Imperfections here include many chips, crazing and general inclusions throughout, liquid stains, rock chips, exposed surface rust, scratches, rust behind rear wheel and around wheel opening. Our consignor states this is mostly original paint. Interior Black vinyl door panels are dressed with a cream colored band that features a Nova name plate, typical period hardware, and a pair of speakers on each door. The split bench front seats are also black vinyl and there are several tears on the driver's side. Our passenger side and rear bench show some age but are intact. A crack plagues the rim of the black steering wheel which shares the column with an added tachometer and fronts a sweeping style speedometer that tops at 120mph and is flanked by a clock, then the vertical vent controls and an AM/FM/8-track player, currently holding Bad Company and hovering over an added twin gauge pod. There's also a vintage Craig audio controller and Powerplay amplifier under the dash. The Muncie shifter is floor mounted and surrounded by black carpet in good shape with some age under a headliner that also shows some wear. Some light surface rust is found in the trunk along with a color matched spare. Drivetrain Here we have the numbers matching 396ci L78 V8, rated at 375 horsepower and fueled via a 4-barrel carburetor, of course! Behind it, the numbers matching Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission routing power to the 12 bolt axle with 3.55 gears and Positraction. Power brakes are on board along with headers. Undercarriage Driver quality conditions are found underneath with lots of patina and some remnant oil and grease but no rust issues. The dual exhaust run from the headers into Turbo mufflers and exits discreetly inside of the rear fenders. Suspension includes coil spring in front and leaf springs in back while brakes are divided as power disc up front and power drum in back. Drive-Ability It's time to get up and go, so we got up and left, exiting the mall with the raucous rumble of a big block Nova and around the test loop. We're on 20 year old tires here so pace ourselves accordingly and find that all functions on this no frills fun machine work as intended with the exception of the windshield washer nozzles. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase. Although more than 17,000 Nova
