Highlights

Five-speed with selectable AWD/4x4
Bizarre Italian design
Rust-free

Overview

The Italian people’s car is suitably avant garde, especially when it debuted in 1980 as the replacement for the rear-engined Fiat 126. Decidedly boxy, obsessively utilitarian, and an absolute icon of the European mountains, the Panda really was the earliest form of today’s AWD cross-over formula.
Practical, capable, and quirky enough to even give Doug DeMuro a conniption fit.

Designed by the famous Italdesign styling firm – responsible for icons like the VW Golf, DMC DeLorean, BMW M1, and Maserati MC12 – the Fiat Panda is a unique example of industrial design. Its form is the result of its function, with no inch of space wasted or made any more extravagant than needed. It had to be cheap, durable, and ready to serve Italy’s newest generation car buyers.

Powered by an 1,100cc, single-cam four-cylinder with about 50hp and 63 lb ft of torque, the Panda isn’t sporty by any means, but it does have enough power to cruise 65 around the hilly highways and byways, and averages around 30mpg. EFI makes it incredibly convenient, too, instead of a sometime-tempermental carburetor like many other compacts from this time period. A five-speed manual is backed by an AWD transverse that locks its center differential to bring the rear axle online – it was marketed as a 4x4, but doesn't have a low-range transfer case, so think of it more like selectable AWD. It’ll eat up mud, snow, and sand; but while geared lower than a standard Panda, it’s not like the rock-crawling ratios of a traditional 4x4.

Inside, the interior is probably one of the most unique things about the Panda experience. The dash is essentially one giant, carpeted book shelf. At the bottom of the dash, the ash tray clips onto the edge and slides down to the passenger or driver. In front of you, the abstract cluster was modular, and could easily swap sides for LHD or RHD markets by design too. And being the passionate lovers that Italians are, the seats were designed such that they all fold flat for camping – they were keen on implementing that feature.

Overall, this Panda is a great survivor even with approximately 147,000 miles. Essentially all-original, and built unlike anything sold today, it offers a fun and low-key driving experience. It’s easily one of the rarer Italian imports too, something you can poke at Ferrari nerds about at the local cruise night. With its selectable AWD, it’s also a year-round machine, and we wouldn’t hesitate to bomb through a snow storm in one.

If you’re looking for something different, but still wildly practical, the Fiat Panda 4x4 has you covered.
